DIY Scented Soy/Beeswax Wax Melts
I love a fragrant home . . . a very, very fragrant home. My preferred fragrance dispenser is the electric wax warmers which use wax melts. I want to be washed with pretty smells wherever I may walk in my home from the point of entry to the bedroom. But I recently learned that when you are using the commercial, mass produced wax melts, they are typically made with paraffin wax. This is known to release unhealthy fumes when burning. So, I was on the hunt for a safer alternative for my family. But let's also talk about how gift worthy these are . . . seriously, I would LOVE to receive a gift like this. What an affordable, easy to personalize and QUICK gift this is to prepare. If you purchase the supplies in the amounts that I did, your costs for 24 sets is under $2.00 EACH. Honest.

There are only three ingredients in this mix. They include two types of wax and a fragrance. I chose to use flaked soy wax, along with beeswax pellets in a 3 part soy, 1 part beeswax blend. The soy wax is very soft. If you've ever gotten crumbly soy wax melts, it's probably because they are 100% soy wax. I like the firmer wax and believes it helps hold the scent longer too.
While some sources encourage exclusive use of essential oils versus created fragrance oils, I am all about the scent throw. I want a strong, long lasting scent. So I choose to use fragrance oils. You will want to make sure the fragrance oils you select are made for candles. This is important as they must be able to withstand the higher temps. Feel free to mix and match different scents to create your own unique blend. For this batch, I combined five parts of a very creamy, buttery scented Vanilla with one part of a red hot, spicy candy scented Cinnamon. It creates a beautiful warm, fall scent for the kitchen. I used about a half ounce of fragrance oil to four ounces of wax.
Each clam shell package holds two ounces of liquid. So to make a small batch of two boxes and give me the opportunity to test out new scent combinations, I will blend one ounce of beeswax pellets with three ounces of flaked soy wax.
I pour the wax into a small mason jar and place this inside of a saucepan filled with water. I bring the water to a simmer and stir gently occasionally.
As soon as the wax is melted . . . about five to eight minutes, I remove from heat and add the fragrance oil. Again, stirring gently to blend.
Immediately pour into the clam shell cases. Allow to sit and harden. This doesn't take long, maybe 30-45 minutes.
While it is hardening, I create a label and name the scent. Have fun with this! I print on plain copier paper, cut to size and use a glue stick to adhere to the front of the case.
